Day 3

A baby duck managed to discover my swimming pool one warm spring day. I have four dogs and a cat so how it came to be that a tiny duck could safely make it to my pool is a mystery to me. I heard the dogs whining and making funny noises and so I went out to check and see what was happening. I had to get close to see the little bird frantically swimming from side to side trying to stay away from the curious dogs who had their noses stuck in the water. It didn't appear the duck could fly away and so I disappeared for a moment to find something safe to scoop up the little water fowl. When I returned with a large plastic shopping bag with a solid bottom, the frightened creature was not any happier to see me.

The harder I tried to scoop him up, the more excited the dogs got. Soon they were diving in to help, completely forgetting they hate water and do not swim. Before long the event turned into a slap stick comedy suitable for Funniest Home Videos. I was soaked and the duck was even more panicked. I had to wait for the frightened bird to get tired and slow down before I could sneak up from behind and capture him. When at last I had him, I was able to take the bagged duck to my neighborhood park and release him safely into the pond. I like to believe he hooked up with his mom and siblings and went on to live happily ever after.

The duck fought against me for so long not knowing that I was there to provide the path to freedom, peace, and safety. So many times we each struggle against our own good in much the same way, unwilling to trust an outstretched hand sent to help us.

Verse:
For I am the LORD, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.

Word for This Week
Help

Today I will breathe deep and contemplate in silence all the hands that have helped me along the way. I will remember all the times someone stepped up in my time of need. I go to silence in gratitude for the promise that help is always there and all I have to do is give in to my good.  Knowing I am not alone gives me courage and strength.

  1. Hilarious. Sometimes I'm the duck. Sometimes I'm the dog. Sometimes I'm the drenched do-gooder -- hopefully with the good sense to find joy and humor in the midst.
