Day 13
I was thinking about families. A family is the place where theoretically we should feel the most comfortable and be the most respected and accepted. Sometimes that doesn't turn out to be true. The truth is, though families can be our greatest source of joy, they can also be our greatest source of challenge. Family strife is not new. The Bible is filled with stories of family strife beginning with Adam and Eve. Imperfect families exist throughout the Bible and throughout life.
Parents still wait for their prodigal children to return home and recover from sometimes serious issues like addiction. Children too sometimes wait for their prodigal parents to get over their own serious issues. Sometimes families of friends hurt each other with words and actions and so too, church families can turn judgmental or even split over differences of theory and practice.
Jesus knew when our hope is in people our expectations are often not met. He knew how hard it can be to meet our own needs and meet the expectations of those we love. He knew as humans we can be harshest on those we know best and should love most. He knew when he warned that it can be hard to get a splinter out of another’s eye because of the log in their own. Jesus knew that we cannot always look to people, even those we love most for our peace and comfort. He knew we have to turn to God.
Verse for This Week
Job 5:21 and 27
You will be protected from the lash of the tongue, and need not fear when destruction comes. . . We have examined this, and it is true. So hear it and apply it to yourself.

Today as I sit in contemplative prayer. I will feel the love of God's family surrounding me and feeling me up.
